08-29-03: I have found another label that puts out pretty good world music.  Noxos World has a lot of artists that I'd never heard of, but can enjoy at an affordable price.  naxos.com on the web if you are interested, but you'll need to do some manuvering.  Click onto the labels and series link and let your mouse hover over labels, when the next window pops up, find Noxos World and you will have struck gold!  I found a great Chinese percussionist by the name of Yim Hok-Man, and Russian singer/songwriter Boris Grebenshikov.  You know, after school started, the traffic wasn't as horrible as anticipated, but gas prices are only increasing, so maybe rollerblading wouldn't be such a bad idea. Have a great weekend!  Lots of fun stuff happening at Kapiolani Park in the next couple of days with the Okinawan Festival...get off of the couch and andagi to Jake.
08-21-03: San Diego Zoo has a new addition to the panda enclave...Mommy panda, Bai Yun,  gave birth to a healthy cub, but zoo officials are predicting that the second twin she is carrying may be stillborn.  Their older sister, Hua Mei, was born four years ago (to the date!)  and is the only surviving panda born in the United States.  Interestingly, the whole family is in America for research and will be returned to China after their twelve year loan expires.  I've only seen pandas in the Beijing Zoo, and I envy researchers who have the opportunity to study pandas...back to reality...school starts in four days!
08-18-03: Honolulu Weekly readers voted KTUH as the best place to hear NEW music...wow, thanks for picking college radio.  Summer seems to turning deadly in Europe...with France taking the brunt of it with an estimated 5,000 people dying in record breaking temperatures.  I take back every complaint I have about the summer heat.  Headaches are just around the corner, as school starts on the 25th and traffic is going to be a trial.  Another reason why I wish I could just live in a bubble and float to work along the wind currents.  Okay, daydreaming aside, yesterday's show was very intense as I managed to work through five continents in 180 minutes...I wanted to visit  New Zealand, but I ran out of time, so I will play Oceania next week...ciao!
08-12-03: The wind chimes woke me up this morning and boy was I happy to hear them tinkling in the breeze...the summer heat is not as hard to bear with the tradewinds for company.  Summer vacation ends in two weeks...I still haven't gotten over to the North Shore for rainbow shave ice or trailed any sand into the car.  I'm the proverbial lump on a log...at least I got to sneak a peek at Gallery Soul Lenz in Chinatown.  On the to-do list:  Wander through the Honolulu Academy of Arts Graphic Arts Gallery and have a leisurely brunch at the Waioli Tea House in Manoa.  Sadly, the Waioli Tea House may be serving its last pot of tea at the end of the month.
08-07-03:  The first week of August zipped by and I'm still writing July on the dated line.   It's quiet on the music front and there have been some interesting blips on the radar;  I'm waiting for the delivery of the newest Senor Coconut CD and the Freaky Friday soundtrack looks very promising...I wonder if the Pink Slips are a real band.  Okay, the summer is crazy hot and I wish that I could see more movies, but with the downturn of my pocketbook's economy, I have to be very selective and draw the line somewhere...I really recommend that you think twice about seeing the lastest Spy Kids movie...uh, yeah...I was snookered into seeing it and I would not recommend it to anyone over 10 years old.  My money would have been better spent on Time Crisis at the local arcade.  So far Disney has been the most consistent with Finding Nemo, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Freaky Friday. Well, I have to take the car in and get the CV boot changed and avoid serious car nightmares.   Life is so mundane...I wish I were in a movie instead.
