| 07-22-03: My music library has multiplied by leaps and bounds because of the sale that Tower Records has in the classical section...picked up a whole bunch of discs for $1.99...and 4% tax is way cheaper than shipping and handling! 07-21-03: Last week Cuba lost two musical icons...Compay Segundo died at 95, and Celia Cruz at 77. I was surprised that I couldn't find The Buena Vista Social Club CD or any Celia Cruz on vinyl. In all fairness, I'm sure that KTUH has them, I just didn't know where to look for them. I hope that your week has been better than mine. I'm sleepy all the time and my forehead is a disaster area, blemishes galore and I don't know what to do about them; I refuse to pop them, and it takes forever for it to clear up...I'm monitoring my diet and all I can think of is that I'll have to cut out the mochas. Well, I'm off to see the wizard, the wonderful wizard of Os. More fountain pen tips anyone? 07-14-03: Chillout music is how one listener described the show. I even got to talk to West Virginia! That made my hour fly by as I tried to do some editing on the computer so that I could get Will's request on the air. I got chicken skin when I realized that The Planet of Sound was traveling across the Pacific. The requests were great and aptly suited to the sounds that were spinning. I was having too much fun going through the vinyl vault...I didn't find Babble's first album, but I did pull out some of my favorite tracks, B-Movie and The The ...yes, I do adore music from the 80's too. Judging from the calls, Eric Levy is a favorite. I always get the nicest queries or complements when I play his tracks...his album is called ERA, The Mass. This is the third in the ERA series; I've got the second one and I am keeping my eyes open, trying to find the first. Happily, I look forward to playing more new music and thanks to Keith, I've been searching for different versions of an early 20th century Zulu song. This should make for a very interesting show, I hope. Have a great week! 07-07-03: Another show in the bag...as the hours dwindle away, I am amazed at how quickly the minutes tick when I'm in the air-room. Unfortunately, I have never been able to take that feeling with me when I'm waiting to see my primary care physician. Well, it is summer and this is when I start feeling nostalgic and day dream about my best summer vacation. It was a few years ago that I flew into England, took the chunnel into France's train station, saw the infamous Metro for myself, and then took another train into Italy. We zipped through Rome up toward Milan... the whole country was a treat on all the senses. Architecture and galleries abounded and I found my first Festivalbar compilation in an out-of-the-way music store...I think I was supposed to be drawing, but a bunch of us decided to use our time exploring the aisles of foreign music instead. It turned out to be one of my better decisions because I've played my Festivalbar discs over and over again...and I've become an avid collector of both the blu and the rosso covers. I had a crush on a Venetian and fell in love with pomodoro salads. Mainly I had no stress, and got to experience such a fascinating culture. In reality, life is so different...I have to go and pick out a color because it sounds like I will be painting walls in the near future...not a great idea if you're wearing a skirt.. 07-04-03: If only everyday were a celebration...than I would be the only one on the road and traffic would be lovely. The rest of the clan picnics the day away and I will celebrate vicariously through their escapades. I am wearing three layers of cotton and wool, running from room to room, making sure that I won't have to call Charles and make him come into the office on the Fourth of July...so far the morning has been very kind to me and the machines and I have reached a silent pact...it's Friday!! What kind of fun things are going on? Well, I won't be able to discover for myself until this evening...lots of fireworks and although they are visually thrilling, the smoke and noise produced negates their charm. And finally on a down-note: Tune in this weekend for the final shows of Brother J and Jazzbro. These two talents have been the jazz anchors of weekend programming...listen to RED HOT and the COOL on Saturday from 9-12, and a six hour JAVA JAZZ on Sunday, starting at 9...thanks guys, you've made KTUH a wonderful place...be well, you will be missed. |
