| Music Reviews The newest reviews are at the end. There are currently two pages of reviews...enjoy. Please email me with any comments or review suggestions. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Killers- "Hot Fuss"--- I was really excited about this CD, even though I had heard nothing about it other than a few seconds of a few songs on Amazon.com. I was surprised how good it was, but I still wasn't sure if I liked it. There is an 80's pop sound to it that could have made me decide to give it a bad review, and a few of the lyrics are kind of weird (something about someone having a boyfriend that looked like a girlfriend...I don't know). But, there is something about it that makes it hard to put down. Something about the singer's voice and the music in general. I've listened to the album several times, and I keep flip flopping back and forth about the use of the keyboards (which is the origin of that 80's sound we loved so much when we were younger). I couldn't decide if it was a refreshing use of a lost art, or an annoying attempt at retro rock. And, I've decided that it is neither. It is just a different sound in a time when we are starved for a choice other than teen pop and annoying Metallica (when they were good) rip-offs. That choice is all I care about. I've welcomed this album into my CD collection with open arms, and I'm captivated by it. Final Say: Can't wait for more from this band! But, think about using the keyboard more sparingly (or at least further in the background)...there is a reason thast most bands of the 80's were one hit wonders. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Keane- "Hopes and Fears" ---- I didn't realize it, but I loved Keane before I had even heard of them. Now, I don't condone air heads dancing around in their skivvies...but, if you've seen the Victoria Secret add on TV and have been captivated by the beautiful song playing in the background, you too are a Keane fan. Hate the girls....love the song. So, I bought this CD not knowing this song (Somewhere only we know) was on it, and I was thrilled. The first half of this album is great. The songs are beautiful and the vocals are so smooth. If you've heard of the band Arid (which I doubt you have), it sounds a little like them. The second half of the album sort of blurs together. It sounds like one big, long pretty song. Which, I agree is pretty, but still annoying at the same time. I like songs that have different sounds and that I can distinguish from. I mean, put some effort into it. Help me get into each song individually. But, I still recomend this album to everyone. It is very soothing and I think worth the money. Final Say: Pretty song, same old sound. Again, the fear of another one hit wonder is surfacing. P.S. Victoria Secret- No one cares anymore...get some male models. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Flogging Molly- "Within a mile of home" ---- Irish Punk can never dissapoint, especially if you are Flogging Molly. They defined the genre. I guess I am a tad bit bias, but, I can't deny a good thing. I have been craving more of FM for some time now. And I am so happy with what was given to me. I wouldn't say that this album is any better than the other two albums by the band (Swagger and Drunken Lullibies), but it is a great addition to a perfect collection. I love the vocals; the different instruments, rich with tradition, used in a more modern way; and the lyrics are always perfect. I am more partial to the prior albums, but how can you beat a song like "The Worst Day Since Yesterday" or the most beautiful song ever written, "Grace of God Go I". They set the bar too high. But, this album is great, and a very close third to the other two. If you have never heard Irish music, it may be hard to get used to at first, but it is rewarding in the end. Final Say: Guaranteed to make you happy. If you are new to FM get Swagger first and work your way to this album. If you don't like the thought of Irish Punk, crawl back into your closed minds and enjoy what little you can of your empty pop and copy-cat metal...we don't need you anyway. Onto Review Page 2 HOME |
