voodoo flowers
 2004 by Coleen Shin
i want to give what i can
i remember, mama said
it's the best gift
all that woman lovin'
the morning cup of slow
the rolled up matchin' socks,
makin' those snap decisions
which elastic waistbands
no longer do
mercy sakes, I feel so needed
with the dryer full
the washer runnin'
your white shirts almost done
and the iron hot n steamy
most women ain't this fortunate
to have a husband clever enough
to tell ya exactly what he want
even which shoulder to look over
when you're hitched an grinnin'
leaned over the kitchen sink
all that and good shoes
good food and a garden
though it's mostly flowers
red cosmos, thin and tall
that lean in the wind
bend in the rain lookin' so fragile
though they ain't, sakes no
theyz touched as hell
with some crazy come-back spell
cast by the sun,
hungry voodoo flowers
you fallin' from the sky
me, lookin' up
