kidnapping dawn
I walk the promenade to the end
of the jetty sit down to dangle naked
legs to unwrap your love from the handkerchief
I shoved in my pocket long ago the gold
of vanquished armies ripples away on the hour
leaving almond green hollows & tins of sardines fresh days
to come footprints marked in rock with fifteen
million neurons our brains are consummate recognizers
of patterns eyes & faces become our comfort
or cross I saw a Cats Eye through the thirty-inch
scope was given a sermon by a man in a crumpled
fedora seven hundred & fifty feet underground
where Jesus face stared out from a stalagmite I see
your face everywhere turned over a back scarred like
the unprotected side of the moon smell the sea roses here
over sea walls containing lives & lawns & shadows
more solid than the real thing
