imaginary memories of bowling
 2001 by john e

growing up together
we would have ripped the sun
to pieces to take home
we would have stuffed each others' pieces
into the holes we grew as we grew older
black pits from which questions bubble
timidly and are silenced
i would have thought the spiky glow to be
you not the sun
i could have been no happier
growing up together
we would have done stupid things like bowling
and laughed afterwards while we sang
and walked and later kissed
we would have stolen a stream to sit by
and had it sit motionless
like music waiting for a cue
and we would have given it the cue
by a change of breathing
sheltering cast down eyes
speech slowing and
slight noises
of yea and nay
growing up together
everything would have been yea or nay
more yea except for bowling
yea as our ship
slid downstream
through a bright sleet
of sun pieces
growing up
we knew no one
like we would have
known each other
