| Baseball is comprised of several types of players; hitters, fielders, and pitchers. There is only one pitcher at a time on the field, however, and only he is guaranteed to handle the ball each play. This fact alone makes pitching probably the most important position in baseball. To become an effective pitcher in Major Leauge Baseball, one must not only have strength and coordination, but also a knowledge of different types of pitches and how to throw these pitches. A major league pitcher cannot get by throwing only a fastball. He must have at least two additional pitches, and often more. On this website, the physics and dynamics involved with a major league pitcher will be examined. A general discussion of pitching will be presented, followed by in depth looks at several types of pitches, including the fastball, curveball, slider, and knuckleball. Click on any link below to go directly to each discussion. | ||||||||||

| The general dynamics of pitching were analyzed. Transfer of momentum and anugluar momentum and velocities are important aspects. The fastball was analyzed. Drag plays a role in the speed, while the backspin creates a slight 'lift.' The slider and curve ball both 'curve' or drop due to the air resistance and off centered drag. A knuckle ball was also analyzed, and is effective because the lack of spin creates an erractic movement due to the slight wind variations. Knowing these aspects of the dynamics of pitching, and the details of such presented in this website, would make any pitcher more successful. | ||||||||||
