The Crying Baby

Definition
All babies cry as one of the methods they have of communication but when the crying becomes inconsolable or continues for hours and hours this then is a crying baby.

Crying is used to communicate many problems such as pain, hunger or wanting to be cuddled. Types of cries are different and mothers frequently become expert in recognizing from the different type of cries what their baby wants. Research has shown that, despite popular belief, mothers are generally unable to identify the cry of their particular baby amongst others but they rapidly learn to recognize the different type of cries and therefore what babies want. Normally when their wants are satisfied, that is a feed is given or the baby changed, the baby settles down and is content again. Even if the crying and screaming continues for several hours, such as in 3-month colic, there is a recognizable reason and an expectation that the episodes will finish around about 3 months of age. Although it is sometimes difficult to cope with 3-month colic at least the reason for the crying is understood. However, when the crying is excessive and continues for no obvious reason many parents become alarmed that something seriously wrong may be causing the crying. The parents may also be losing sleep which makes the crying even harder to cope with. It is thought that that as many as 1 in 10 babies cry excessively at some time so it really is quite common.

If all the normal remedies such as feeding, changing, picking up have been repeatedly tried unsuccessfully it is important to check with your doctor that nothing is physically wrong with your baby. It rarely is.

Treatment
Try to think about your baby positively. Your baby is a special baby who has some extra needs and you need to find out what those needs are. Dont blame yourself. It is nothing to do with your skill at being a parent and dont blame your baby who is just reacting to the way he feels. Many babies respond to being picked up or gently rocked or held when the parents are walking up and down and everyone knows about the midnight car journey to settle the baby. If your baby does quieten when carried about think about using a baby carrier, which will give you more freedom.

Occasionally something in the breast feeding mothers diet may be upsetting the baby but it is better to discuss changes in maternal diet with a dietician rather than change your diet randomly. Do not feel you have failed as parents if you ask for help from grandparents or friends. Sometimes a good nights sleep allows the parents to relax and breaks the crying cycle in the baby. Sometimes a short hospital admission allows both parents and the baby to relax and sleep soundly in a supportive environment.

A constantly crying baby is difficult to cope with but do not feel alone. Many parents have been there before and can offer sympathy, support and advice.
