| Pico de Jesus Pico was a Mexican governor of Alta California. He constructed a three story hotel in 1869. This building was the finest hotel in the southwest. The Pico House opened in June 1870. The hotel cost about $85,000. The style of the hotel was Italian. The cost of the rooms per night was $2.50. They offered water and gas in every room to ease the stay of guests. In 1920 the hotel name changed momentarily from Pico House to The National Hotel. Since the name was not recognizable to guests, it changed back to the Pico House. In the mid 1920s, the hotel was closed to the public. After that event until today, the City of Los Angeles owns the historic landmark. |

| Save Our History is a national grassroots history education and historic preservation program developed by The History Channel in association with Laura Bush and Preserve America. The Save Our History program supplements the teaching of American History in our schools and encourages teachers and students to get involved in their communities by working with preservation organizations on local preservation projects. In the Spring of 2004, through partnerships with schools districts, government officials, and state historic preservation officers, The History Channel launched the Save Our History program in ten pilot cities: Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, St Louis, Tampa, and Washington D.C. Through Save Our History, The History Channel provided free educational support and comprehensive materials to teachers, giving them the tools they needed to actively involve their students in the preservation of their community's past. Beyond the ten Save Our Hsitory pilot cities, communities, schools, and individuals across the nation were able to access the free educational material on the Save Our History website at www.saveourhistory.com |
