{rollo}The AMX-13 light tank was designed after the WWII, the first protoype ready for testing in 1948. GIAT started production just four years later. At first the AMX fitted a 75 mm gun, too little gun since the war. Latter versions mounted a 90 mm gun, or even a 105 mm, but the french army already had the AMX-30 with that gun, so the AMX-13 with the 105 mm gun never served in the french army, being distributed mostly to southamerican countries.

The time ellapsed between the design and the production, allowed GIAT use the hull and mechanics for a wide range of vehicles, like the AMX-VCI-IFV, and 105 mm and 155mm self-propelled guns for armoured artillery general purposes.

The AMX-13 had not stabilized its main gun, being incapable to fire while moving. Just the automatically fed gun (17 rounds ready to use) was mounted in the upper side of the oscillating turret. Nowadays, some users had fitted NBC and night vision systems.
