Power Supplies
There are two types of power supplies, AT and ATX. The two pictures below are ATXs.  The first one has its case on and the second shows what a power supply looks likes inside.
Power supplies basically convert AC voltages to DC voltages.  120 volts comes into the power supply unit and turns into two main wires coming out.  There is the 5 volts and the 12 volts, the 5 for mainly digital circuits and the 12 for motors in disk drives and fans.  There is also a 3.3 volts for CPUs.
The main specifications of power supplies is in watts. Voltage times Current equals watts. Current is measured in amps.
Side Note
The main difference between an AT and an ATX is that the AT has a plug for a monitor and is not as commonly used as ATXs.
