| SITTING DUCKS (MUSCUTT) Youve been caught in the middle again and its not your fault but you say so anyway I dont know how you deal with it but you do and you say its not a problem anymore I dont know when or how Im going to solve this problem but one things true youre the only one I need Sometimes its not worth living with the guilt when youre in the crossfire and I didnt think At the time how you feel but now I do and you say its not a problem anyway This song was much longer (as were most of them) before it got whittled down, I felt there was too much fat on it it could do without most of the lines that were written for it. As a result, its been stripped down to the bare minimum of the lyrics about a mutual friend of someone you fall out with and telling them its great youre still mates with them even though you feel like youre making life difficult for them. SHADOWS IN THE WRECKAGE (MUSCUTT) They pile high in the smoky sky put that behind you, youre entering a new phase now Turn your light down low theyre watching our rendezvous in the shadows of the wreckage Their surveillance is everywhere and we are meaningless so take my hand and let me get away tonight In the shadows of the wreckage of this town They pile high in the smoky sky quotation summers ration growing dry So take me from the wreckage and Ill betray you again in the smoke filled sky Another one written at the end of the weird phase kind of a Gary Numan thing happening here. Its the imagery, shady meetings in smoking wreckage of some town where civilisation has collapsed. Numan always had a very futuristic feel to his songs, particularly the Tubeway Army and early solo stuff. I wanted to put a bit of that imagery into this song. HOUSEBRICKS ALIVE (MUSCUTT) Resurrected infiltrated embolism fate blackmailed breakout enema trait Man and machine Venus and Mars the tower blocks and the Moon and stars Telling stories wasting time waiting times are shorter than mine Communication regulation personification faceless nation man and machine Venus and Mars The tower blocks and the Moon and stars public humans in too many cars Direction acceleration to afar communication regulation faceless nations termination I love this one, it has to be one of the songs Im most proud of. The words just fit so well and roll off the tongue easily. Its not really about anything, but I thought the words fitted so nicely and its got a kind of spacey feel to it. TALK (MUSCUTT) Never showing anything to me contribute to your own destruction Dont tell me you know it all because you dont even come close Im surprised youre still alive Talk to me in poetic rhythm talk to me in silence talk to me in confidence youve been sent to me by providence Well, what can I say? The title says it all really. Its about communicating with people. Simple. AGENT (MUSCUTT) Fire inside motorway siding with telephone lines closed circuit video lines survey us constantly You want to get away but you cant get away so easily deploy disguises for a change and tear it away Cant you investigate because youre the only one who needs to know Just be yourself or youll scare them all away More surreal stuff, though the line fire inside motorway siding with telephone lines was written about the motorway those little SOS phone boxes you get every so often on the hard shoulder. The rest seems to be about putting on disguises and not being able to get close to anyone because your identity is always changing. I wrote it coming home for the summer from University and as a result I was in a pretty good mood. ON-LINE SLAUGHTER (MUSCUTT) Feel the pressure feel the pressure to release this trigger like the voice that told me to pick up the pieces Pick up the useless pieces of the day it came apart inside it never feels the same way why dont you understand Why dont you know? I need to know the pressure youre under before were through Onslaught of visions attacks me stops me dead and from the species I was Im beginning to see changes I cant feel it anymore I dont feel alive when Im caught in the onslaught Caught in the onslaught of your eyes its the events of yesterday that hold us back they say Like the voice that told us to control the past the past is useless like the day it fell apart Came apart in motion believe it because its real why cant you learn? I need to know the trouble youre in before were through onslaught of visions attacks me stops me dead And from the beginning its changing and I cant feel it anymore I cant see all around me for fear of being caught in the onslaught the onslaught of your eyes This song (originally called Slaughter) is about having an argument with someone, and that really scary look women can get sometimes in their eyes when they get very angry. INCREASING THE RISK OF DEFORMITY IN YOUR UNBORN CHILD (MUSCUTT) Feel it ripping into your soul can you feel it pulling you down pulling you out of living Turn away and ignore the warnings about the images you see on your great escape Now the rain falls slowly now you separate softly increase the risk of abnormality and youll regret your decisions Increase the risk of abnormality in me when the dawn arrives youll feel the same So full of guilt when you should be full of joy turn it off and amend your hate trail Youll feel obliged and enjoy your great escape now the rain falls slowly and you separate again Increasing the risk of abnormality in me and in you Youll regret your decisions youll fake your good intentions to me Well, its about smoking when youre pregnant, isnt it? The second line is the clincher ignore the warnings about the images you see on your great escape. The great escape part is referring to the cigarettes, many people smoke them to calm them down, and the images they see part is talking about those horrid adverts where they squeeze all that shitty stuff out a dead persons heart valves. Nice. |
