The 2009 season is finally underway and the balmy weather continued in the harbour capital. First up were the Teddy Bears in the last of the grading games...the other two weren't able to be played. But for the first full run of the season the boys did well with some hard running and tackling in the first half which continued with fresh legs in the second. A few new faces, as usual, and The Stats Man might struggle with a few names to begin with. Hosh opened the try-scoring with a well-worked try after some sustained pressure. Ben Drake added the conversion after earlier slotting a penalty when the Teddy Bears just kept on infringing and the ref had had a gutsful. But just on half-time the Bears managed to score in the corner so it was 10-5 to The Ginners at the break. The second half saw the return of Tony, Freddy and The Guillotine and The Ginners kept the presure on. Ben slotted another penalty and Heaves and Dylan chimed in with a try apiece to put it well out of reach. The Bears never looked like scoring again. Good first-up effort |

The competition started with a difficult game against a bunch of smashers from Poneke. The boys had difficulty with the size mis-match but still fought well. Poneke scored early which could have meant a high scoring game but it wasn't like that. Some good backline moves were put together but some potential scoring opportuniies went begging. Poneke then let themselves down with reckless tackling and blatant fouls so the Ginners kept in reach with Mucker scoring penalties. At one point the Ginners were in the lead 9-8 but in the end the size of Poneke wore the boys down and they scored a couple of quick tries at the end. Was a good, dedicated effort though, with a number of guys playing out of position |
