History

•         Lacrosse was originally started by American Indians before European Settlers arrived

•         The game traditionally has its roots in war and legend

•         Traditional game rules most resemble Women’s rules and play today, although it was mainly a male sport

•         Games were often used as dispute-settlers

•         Games were played until inherent violence and European missionaries ended traditional game play

•         Closely related to field hockey and shinny

•         Named by French from a general term for a game played with a stick
