Traditional "Koukoularika" from Kimi of Evia island

"Koukoularika" are handcrafts that are being constructed by the silk cocoon of the silkworms which is being embroidered on velvet. This is a very old traditional art of Kimi of the Evia island that has started many centuries ago.The silk and the cocoon produced by the silkworms consisted the raw material for the production of magnificent handcrafts. There still exist a few pieces of art constructed by silk cocoon that last since the end of the 18th century.

Today there still exist several local ladies that continue to grow silkworms at their homes, and in this way they keep alive the craft of their grandmothers. They cut the cocoon in small pieces, according to the design. All pieces are being assempled on the velvet cloth, piece by piece. Finally they silk-embroider it and finish every piece of art with several decorative material. In this way, and in spite of all difficulties they continue to produce traditional types of "koukoularika", with exactly the same craftmanship that old women of Kimi used to use inorder to produce wonderful art pieces.

From our side, trying to help in their effort, we have already created our collection, which we think can fulfil a big range of client's desires. Further to the the types of "koukoularika" that we have included in our collection, we can execute any design that may be requested. In fact, apart of the traditional uses of "koukoularika" as portraits with or without photos on them, mirrors, serving trays, they have already been used with great success as wall covers, or drawer doors and generaly furniture decorative coatings.
