My Mission in Peru
I have volunteered to come here and do whatever the church needs me to do.  Here are some of the things I have been doing:
Each month, the church delivers a sack of food, about 75 lbs, to families within the parish.  Currently, over 800 families are recieving these donations from their adopted families in the United States at a cost of about $25 per month.  More information about adopting families in Piura is at www.santisimo.org.
I have helped to build a number of bamboo houses.  They cost $315 each and are roughly 400 s.f. Here is how a house is built.
Ok, I know everyone thinks I'm a pretty impressive guy, but that is not me doing eye surgery!  I spend the week as a "Go-fer" for the eye surgery mission.  Mostly, going for supplies, lunch, ect. and also praying with the patients before surgery and translating what I could for those who speak even less Spanish than I (there aren't many).
I have been helping people learn English in several capacities.  My parents came down for a month and started teaching some English classes that I have continued to teach.  There is basic English class and a conversational English group at the church and classes at a local elementary school (pictured).  I've also helped people one on one who have various degrees of english fluency.
I have also helped with clothing distribution.  Clothes are sent from Oklahoma to Santisimo Sacramento.  With thousands of families to distribute clothing to, it amounts to about 7 articles of clothing per family.  We take several bags of clothes to one of the neighborhood chappels and put them on blankets on the floor, then let in about 10 moms to pick out thier 7 pieces until all the moms have had their chance.  Then on to another neighborhood.  This happens in each neighborhood two or three times a year.  Given the limited manpower that the church has and the amount of clothing that is dispersed, this seems to be the only way to do it.
