The Candidates
Message from the Event Chair
THE PAGEANT  2002
The Philippine Independence Day Council ( PIDC ) held its annual Miss Philippines?PIDC 2002 beauty pageant last May 5 at the Rembrandt Hall in Scarborough. From all accounts, the pageant was a tremendous success. The entire program could be a standard for other community beauty pageants to follow. From the well-choreographed performance down to the nailbiter of a finish, the whole event embodies what a pageant should be an entertaining show - and its quality that PIDC has lately been known for.
The whole affair was just full of class and elegance. Everything was done tastefully. All the pageant contestants were stunning in their native dresses and evening gowns. The swimsuit portion certainly was one of the highlights of the show that left the audience screaming for more. The show opened with the talent competition and the different talent presentations by each candidate left the audience in awe. Their performance exemplifies the strength of the Filipina. The question and answer portion tested their mind and fortitude. The judges must have had a difficult task scoring every category because all the contestants have shown not just beauty and grace, but possess amazing talent as well.
Although all of the candidates deserved to be a winner, only one can be crowned the queen. The winner of the Miss Philippines - PIDC 2002 was Miss Abigail Santos of Hamilton, Ontario. She maintained a family tradition of winning as her younger sister also won the title of Miss Philippines-Hamilton the night before. Mom and Dad must be so proud of them . She was crowned by Miss Philippines-PIDC 2001 Miss Giselle Apilan. The first runner-up title went to Miss Rebekah Paculaba-Koenig. She was also named Miss Congeniality and, along with her parents Rose and Bernhard, was the recipient of the Charity Award. Second runner-up was Miss Christie Chuakay. She also won the Best in Gown Award for a design by Miss Ruzziel Gozum of Markham. Miss Alexandra Cardona is this year's Miss Talent for her Broadway style rendition of "Fever". Miss Veronica Delumpa was chosen as Miss Photogenic by members of the press and professional photographers Ariel Ramos and Roger Edralin. Congratulations also go out to Miss Donna Mae Lorenzo, Miss Jeanny Damasco and Miss Kimberley Villafuerte. All candidates received the Sampaguita Award of Appreciation. Former PIDC pageant winners Miss Mercedes Honoridez- Leggett, Miss Grace Lacre, Miss Christina Cameron and Miss Lianne Aliermo presented the prizes.
Kudos, of course, should be given to the PIDC Pageant Committee headed by Mr. Albert Alonzo. In his speech, PIDC President Mr Pempe Saavedra reiterated that PIDC is a not-for-profit organization and expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the officers, committee members and volunteers for all their efforts, dedication and professionalism. He also pointed out that this event was a family affair indeed with spouses and children helping out. Albert, with his wife Lourdes and daughter Odessa were so busy attending to the different facets of this pageant to make it the success that it was. Same with husband and wife team of Joseph and Lorelei Redoblado. A special ovation to the Directress/Choreographer, Mrs. Lorelei Redoblado, for a job well done. One wonders how she managed to balance her time between family, the pageant and her business (she manages Gold Ribbon, a Filipino restaurant and bakeshop located in Scarborough). The beautiful stage decorations were courtesy of Mr. Dario Meriales, and the beautiful floral bouquets were courtesy of Mrs. Imelda Lim of Flowerhaven Design Studio. The emcees, Miss Natalie Nankil and Mr. Rob dela Cruz, held the show together with their eloquence and style - and this is just their first time to host a pageant. Great performances from the all-male R&B group ONS, otherwise known as One Night Stand. Equally compelling were the songs of Miss Lianne Aliermo- winner of PIDC's Miss Talent 2000. Her voice just mesmerized the audience. Miss Grace Lacre- PIDC?s Miss Talent 2001- showed us why she won that award last year. Her name says it all when it comes to her dancing.
The PIDC Pageant Committee would like to thank all the candidates, their parents, relatives and friends for their participation and support. Many thanks to the judges, namely Mr Milford Masters, Atty. Henry Moyal, Miss Mercedes Honoridez- Leggett, Miss Rhoda Mae Gallardo, Mrs. Norma Carpio, Vice Consul Edgar Badajos, Mr Ted Dayno, Mrs. Agatha Luna, Dr. Vicky Santiago, and Miss Abigail Avila. Thanks to the PIDC directors and officers: Mrs. Evelyn Pagkalinawan and family, Mrs. Susan Llanera and family, Ms. Elizabeth Honoridez-Leggett, Miss Alma Benemerito, Mrs. Lolit Tablang, Mrs. Josie Kahkonen, Mr. Dionex Zarate and Miss Maribel Bacod. A special salute to the officers of the Association of Filipino- Canadian Accountants who acted as the auditors for the pageant. The audit team headed by Mr. Julito Longkines and members- Mr. Edgardo Gonzales, Mr. Jose Ragual and Mr. Allen Bacarro demonstrated their professionalism and vigilance to ensure the integrity of the judging for the pageant. And thanks to Mr. Joe Damasco for his efforts in putting together the souvenir program. PIDC would also like to thank all of its sponsors and supporters in this and its other events. And also to the leaders and members of the 41st Toronto Philippine Scouts headed by Mr. Ramon San Juan and Mr. Cesar Cabrera plus the many volunteers, without whose tremendous help the Pageant would not have run smoothly.
Once again, congratulations to all the candidates. See you all next year.
