MABUHAY!
PHILIPPINES FESTIVAL 2002
A multidisciplinary showcase of Philippine
Arts, Culture & Tourism
GENERAL OVERVIEW
Mabuhay! (Pronounced Ma Boo High)a Filipino word commonly used to rally and celebrate life which, when translated, means, "to live". The rallying call tradition is for someone in a celebration gathering to exclaim " Mabuhay! " like a cheer leader and you must respond with a shout back " Ma Boo High! " which means "long live". The objective of Mabuhay! Philippines festival is to sustain and promote the rich heritage, arts, culture and history by working together with the best talents in the communities in Canada as well as the Philippines.
The festival will be held at the Harbourfront Centre on August 9, 10 and 11, 2002. Friday evening's Pier Party will feature "Joey Ayala", a popular and unique entertainer - a composer-lyricist-performer, a multi-instrumentalist and arranger, a storyteller and stand-up comic, a poet-philosopher and occasional magazine columnist. Known primarily for his contemporary use of indigenous instruments, his concerts actually contain a broad range of elements: electric guitar and brass gongs, bass guitar and two-stringed hegalong, drum kit and 8-piece kulintang, roots-inflected rock & roll, reggae, plaintive kundiman and trance chant, all strung together with a sometimes-comic, sometimes-philosophical, always-ecological flair for continuity.
The entertainment emphasis will be traditional songs, notably the kundiman. It is as universal as the American blues and the Negro spirituals, the Portuguese fado, Japanese n'ka or the Italian canzone - which are all about love, suffering, quest for freedom and the easing of unkind fate.
Kundiman is an expression of strong emotions through various types of performing art based on musical instruments and distinguished according to the lyrical vein: freedom, love, romance, patriotism, religious, lamentations, consolations, lullaby, and unity in the community.
