General Overview |
|
|
|
The Mabuhay! (pronounced Ma Boo High) Philippines Festival is a weekend event that will feature Philippine entertainment, arts and culture. The objective of this event is to promote the rich heritage, arts, culture and history of the Philippines to the mainstream Canadian society. The event will be held at the Harbourfront Centre on August 9, 10 and 11, 2002. A ticketed concert on Friday evening will feature either "Banda Kawayan", a popular Philippine-based band that uses bamboo-derived instruments, or a Philippine international talent at the main stage. The show will be free to the public. |

This festival will focus solely on the Philippines and will showcase various entertainments and themes (see attached Program Schedule as well as the Description of Major Entertainment and Acts) such as: a Cultural, Historical Parade, Fiesta Sa Nayon (feast on the countryside) at the Ann Tindall Park; Palaro (old-fashoned children's game); Haranista (roving serenaders); Tawag ng Tanghalan (singing contest); Zarsuela (drama play); Balagtasan (stage drama); and Tula at Dula (poetry). Innovations will be made on the Santacruzan and the Ati-Atihan to make them more entertaining and interactive. |

On top of the usual trade, culinary, arts, crafts, tourism display and promotion, the Festival will also feature and showcase various literaryworks of Filipino authors from North America. Authors from the Philippines might even be invited to attend the Festival. There will be an artist at work demonstration like wood carving and basket weaving. |

|
The ultimate objective is to transform this Festival into a signficant annual event that carries different themes each year along the lines of the popular Caribana Festival and which will cater to both, mainstream Canadians and tourists to Toronto, which may be composed of Filipinos from nearby cities such as Montreal, Ottawa, Hamilton and Niagara area as well as American states such as Michigan, Illinois, New York and Ohio. |

Decorations, Costume and Ground Activities |

|
|
The major focus this time will be the transformation of the Ann Tindall Park into a Philippine countryside celebrating a Fiesta (feast day). Philippine motif such as famous Philippine sceneries and images will be evident throughout the Harbourfront Centre. The area may be divided into different regions of the Philippines to illustrate the distinct cultural, linguistic and racial groups representing the three major islands of the Philippines. Various palaro (games) such as Pabitin and Palo Sebo will be staged throughout the day at the different ground locations, as well as short zarsuela (dramatization of kundiman songs) and impromptu performances by the Haranistas (roving serenaders.; Performers and participants in the parades will be in costumes to depict culture. |

Entertainment Package Overview |

Philippine folk dance presentations by the Fiesta Filipina Dance Troupe, Folklorico Filipino Canada Dance Co. and three other Filipino Canadian dance groups performing such traditional dances like Singkil, Tinikling, Fiesta Sa Nayon, Rigodon de Honor,Pandango sa Ilaw and other foreign-influenced dances. |

A Filipiniana Dance Troupe Presentation - a folk music, song and dance presentation showing a panoramic view of these popular acts including the Spanish and European- influenced dances. |
|
|
|
A cultural and historical parade, in costumes such as the Katipuneros (revolutionaries), tribes of the Mountain Province, Muslims of Southern Philippines, the Leyte-landing re-enacment, battle of Mactan by Lapulapu and Magellan. |
|
|
|
Another attraction is the Santacruzan, a Philippine traditional procession/parade of regal beauties in their elegant gown with their male consort. This will be held in the evening with candlelight and torches to add radiance to the parade. Banda Pilipino, with musicians dressed in Philippine traditional barong, will lead the parade. |

|
|
Ati-Atihan, also known as the Mardi Gras of the Philippines, is a popular and uninhibited fiesta celebration by the people in the Province of Aklan. Revelers daub themselves with soot, wear fantastic and colourful costumes and masks, and dance in the street to the frenzied beat of the drums. |

|
|
A music variety show featuring various choral groups, musical instrument groups and singers. The choral group will perform a mix of Philippine folk songs. The singers will also be grouped into haranistas (serenaders) and will perform impromptu acts throughout the Centre during breaks in the regular entertainment. |

Palaro or Filipino old-fashioned children's game, arnis and sikaran or Philippine martial arts demonstration at the Ann Tindall Park. |

|
Trade, Tourism, Culinary Arts, Craft, Literary, Historical and Other Cultural Promotion |
|
|
|
At World Cafe, food concessionaires will showcase various culinary arts from different regions of the Philippines and from neighboring Asian-Canadian nations. |
|
|
|
At the Sculpture Court, there will be booths for exhibitors featuring Philippine arts and crafts products. We will bring Filipino woodcarvers and craftsmen to do demonstrations of certain Philippine crafts in the artist at work area. |
|
|
|
The Studio Theatre will feature the films of Lino Brocka and/or Marilou Diaz Abaya as a tribute to these world-renowned movie directors. Plans are also being made for a television collage of various Filipino TV shows from the 50s to present. There will also be a promotion of Philippine literary works from known Filipino authors in North America and the Philippines. These authors will be invited to conduct a seminar or workshop. |

The Community Gallery will be transformed into a Tourism and Historical display area. Tourism booth and display area will be handled by members of the Canadian Association of Philippine Travel Agents-Toronto chapter (CAPTA) headed by Ms. Cora Dela Cruz. Display of various arts, cultural significance and history of the Philippines will be handled by the various member-organizations spearheaded by Filipino Seniors Group of Mississauga under Mrs. Ching Quejas. Display will include various costumes and artifacts such as farming implements and old weaponry. |

Gallery II will be the venue for the Philippine Arts Group's (PAG) art exhibits. |
