This summer was a stressful one. After much nail biting, I received word that the instrumentation component of my thesis would be published in June. Then I had to get to work on my thesis. I knew this upcoming school year was going to be hectic, and I needed to get a head start. I was worried about getting as much work on my thesis done as possible. Plus me and Lou were planning our wedding. Consequently I didn't get to do as many day trips as I had hoped. However, all in all, I'm happy that I did get in some great travel.

BOOKS: It was a good summer for reading. There was a new Susan Cummins Miller book called "Hoodoo" out in Spring just in time for the Pennsylvania trip. I picked up a copy of "Yosemite in the Sixties" which is a good picture book to accompany the classic "Camp 4" book. I tore into a copy of "The Last Season" on Harry's recommendation (turns out Harry didn't read it after all). I think the ranger we met at Lake Charlotte was George Durkee who figures prominently in the book. Next I read "Blue Highways" which I had always been meaning to read but never got around to. Apparently, that's one of the last books the ranger in "The Last Season" read before he died. Finally, I just started on "Contrails Over the Mojave" about a test pilot at Edwards AFB.

The summer travel season kicked off with a trip to Pennsylvania for Lou's sister's wedding. The weather was perfect. I got to see some pretty scenery. I jogged along Tulpehocken creek several days in a row. I only wish I would have had time for more trips to the woods. More pics here.

Lou had her free zoo admission day organized by her work. I made sure and brought my 400 mm lens this time. The temperature was perfect even though it was the peak of summer. More pics here.

The came the trip I had been waiting all summer for. I had spent significant time gathering all my gear together. I even gave myself a training regimen. My training almost backfired when I injured myself doing wind sprints in the park. Despite a case of altitude sickness, I got a lot of great shots and took some panoramas. I was pretty happy about the way the trip turned out, even though we only completed a fraction of the proposed route. Getting older I guess! The trip report page is now finished and located here. A separate panorama page is also up here.

Finally, we had the big Hawaii trip. I had a major observing run with IRTF, and when that was complete Lou joined me for a week long honeymoon. The trip report page is now finished and located here.

TRAVEL 2009: What's in store for next year? Well it's looking like a Yosemite trip is in the works for spring, and in early summer we have another wedding to go to, this time in the great state of Wisconsin! I have been promising to get myself to Wisconsin in the summer for several years in a row now, and this time I'm actually going to do it. Perhaps a road trip?
