I think I found a decent panorama script. The script above allows me to place the panoramas into the blog, without taking up too much space. Then you can use your mouse to enlarge the pano to whatever size you want.

SITE NEWS I'm working on more updates. I have been learning a new photography skill. I'm trying to assemble very large panoramas. I plan on posting some soon. The problem with panoramas is obviously that they are so damn big. I have to figure out a good method for posting them. I think I'll just make one of those roll mouse over to enlarge things. Also, since I'm moving into the last year of my PhD (scary), the CV page on the website is being updated. I hope to add something to the research page soon as well.

Reading, PA

These ipod vending machines at the Minneapolis airport are interesting, but I wonder if it comes with music on it? Otherwise you're buying a white brick for the plane.

Ever wonder what happens to your luggage when it gets "lost"? See the crop below:

May, 22-26 2008
Me and Lou spent this Memorial Day weekend attending Lou's sister's wedding in Reading, PA. I got some good pics of the surrounding countryside. We had perfect spring weather the whole weekend and no tornadoes. (Although MoVal got some twisters!). It's so green there!

GREAT UPDATE!: Well, the Mars Phoenix Lander landed successfully, and UCR released a small press release on the Eaton Science Fiction contest. They got a quote from me and Andrew Warren. I love my quote, because they didn't edit it at all. That's exactly how I wanted it. Andrew's quote is along similar lines. The way I read Andrew's quote, is that Science Fiction shows man as a thinking being, capable of great things, while contemporary fiction shows man as a depraved beast capable of nothing. I think that's what he is saying. The press release can be found here.

GREAT NEWS!: UCR sponsored a conference on science fiction literature called the Eaton Science Fiction Conference. This year's focus was on Mars. UCR is the home to an extensive collection of science fiction literature known as the J. Lloyd Eaton Collection. They decided to have a UC system-wide science fiction short story contest. I submitted an entry and it turned out my story was chosen as the winner. This was quite an honor to me, as I was competing with some grad students from the Literature and English departments. They put up a really nice website where you can download a copy of my story here. Below my picture is the opening line to each of our stories. That is funny. It strikes me that from the opening sentences you can already tell what a different background I have from the second place person. The judge for the contest, Howard V. Hendrix described Andrew Warren's story as "spiritual" while mine he described as (paraphrasing here) "the day to day business of how science gets done." That felt great to hear him say that, as that is exactly what I was going for. Although, the day to day business of getting science done is quite boring and would never make for a good story. BTW, the advisor in this story is nothing like my wonderful advisor Gabriela Canalizo! UPDATE: THE CONTEST SITE WAS TAKEN DOWN AS OF MID JULY 2008.

Volcan Mtn Part Deux

May, 14 2008
Took my second hike on beautiful Volcan Mountain. The upper slopes have a really nice forest of oaks. Steve took this great pic of me. My trip report is located here. Steve's pics can be found in Steve's flickr photo stream (goldenstatephoto).

OBSERVATION: If you loved the game "Frogger" as a child of the 80s and you'de like to play a life size version of the game head over to the Trader Joes parking lot in Oceanside on a weekend!

Oxnard CA

May, 3-4 2008
Me and Lou drove up to Oxnard for Lar's wedding at the Mandalay Beach resort. It was a perfect day for a wedding. Many great pics can be found in Steve and Nicole's flickr photo stream (goldenstatephoto). Me and Lou took some short hikes in Point Mugu SP. I really like the way the Daturna plant came out. Later in the day, Steve chows down on his "big texan" style prime rib at the rehearsal dinner.

NEWS: I submitted a letter to Petersen's 4 Wheel and Off Road magazine, about Anza-Borrego State Park. They printed it in their July 2008 issue. I'm not sure when this hits newsstands, but subscribers will already have their copy. The letter is in their "Point Taken" column. Their editor Rick Pewe is a really great guy!

After the hike we drove to Julian for Steve's housewarming party. More pics can be seen here. It was a hundred degrees in Oceanside on that day, so I'm glad we were in the mountains.

March, 29 2008
Went for a day trip to some of the hiking areas along the eastern portion of HWY 76. The initial goal was Love Valley, near Mt. Palomar, but the main highlight proved to be the flowers near Warner Springs. Major updates coming soon.
