Bubba Sketches

It took me a while to get a fix on how to draw Bubba in my own style, and a number of these faces are early attempts at refining his features so that he’d be easily recognisable. There are also several drawings here that were made in the course of laying out certain panels, which were later abandoned in favour of something else – the most notable examples are the shots of Bubba getting clumped in the face by Angus' fist, and the one where his chin is formally introduced to the floor. The former was rejected because after I’d drawn it, I realised it lacked kinetic power; Angus’ punch doesn’t look as if it has any real force behind it. As for the other one, it became apparent that Bubba would have to be facing the other way for the scene as a whole to be comprehensible – you needed to see Angus and Sharlay from the front, for the sake of the speech bubbles. In both cases, you can see the final results here.

Marvellous things, sketchbooks. Whoever invented them must surely have a place reserved in the front row of the Celestial Cinema.
