Angus Sketches

Almost invariably, the chief baddie was an absolute joy to put on the page. Angus gave me the least trouble to draw out of the entire cast – probably something to do with the fact that he was more than a little bit orc-like in his construction. There were still one or two tricky moments though, which led to the creation of multiple sketches – the small group at the bottom of the page here, for example, were my attempts to find a pose I liked for Angus’ introduction in the story, where he makes a suitably bombastic speech while dramatically lit. (I eventually settled on the shaded one, an effect that took ages to achieve in ink.) At the top, you can also see a selection of shots showing Angus’ reactions to getting punched in various ways; all but the first one changed significantly in the completed comic.

Oh, and these sketches also helped me to refine Angus’ talent for evil laughing, which is vitally important in any supervillain. Just ask Stan Lee.
