Procedures

The following are select medical procedures performed on the urinary system.

  1. blood urea nitrogen (BUN): measurement of urea levels in blood.
  2. creatine clearance test: measures the rate at which creatine is cleared from the blood by the kidney.
  3. intravenous pyelogram (IVP): X-ray image of the kidneys and uterus after injection of contrast into a vein.
  4. kidney, ureters, and bladder (KUB): X-ray examination (without contrast) of the kidney, ureters, and bladder.
  5. dialysis: process of separating nitrogenous waste materials from the bloodstream when the kidneys no longer function.
