In The Beginning

Phoenix was the Greek name for the mythological bird that was sacred to the sun-god in ancient Egypt. The phoenix lived in Arabia (read lots of sand) and had a 500-year life span. At the end of that period the bird built its own funeral pyre, on which it was consumed to ashes (what I started with). Out of the ashes a new phoenix arose....

The Chassis

It started out as a bush buggy but needed a lot of help. The important thing was it was already shortened the right amount and the pans had been  replaced with 1/16 steel plate. Two inch angle iron makes up the perimeter. Extra bracing extends out to the front beam and rear torsion assembly. It is close to being bullet proof. Many hours went into modifying this 1966 chassis to suit my needs.

The Body

As you can see in the pics the body was incredibly rough. It was covered in stress cracks, holes from assorted fasteners and 30 some year old paint.  The first steps involved were to remove all the fasteners and pinstriping. Then the entire body was sanded by hand down to the original gel coat. Then each stress crack was opened up to 1/16 inch using a dremel tool and carbide bit. All holes were opened up and countersunk on both sides. The cracks and holes were then filled with short strand fiberglass bodyfiller. At this time the original headlight mounts were shaved and the tail light openings were cut.
