“I am lonely because I am miserable.” How can this quote apply to Holden’s
life? Why is he miserable?
I do not agree with this quote. I cannot see how people can be lonely as a result of being miserable. A person can be miserable as a result of something else, but certainly not the other way around. For example, in the story, one reason Holden is miserable is because his brother died. Or Holden is also miserable because he doesn’t have any friends. I guess that is possible that he doesn’t have any friends because he is so depressed and no one wants to be around him, it is much more probable that he is depressed because he is lonely. Now that I think about it, it could be that he is lonely and because of that he is depressed and because of that he is lonely and all around in a big circle. But I’m not answering the question am I? This quote can be applied to the fact that there are a very small amount of people that he really gets along with in the book. And this makes him lonely, which makes him depressed (and even more distant from other people), which makes him lonely.
