Knot N Time

Gospel and Bluegrass Music

The group has been playing together for about two years and is usually known simply as The Ray Family.  They have played at homecomings, reunions, churches, nursing homes, personal care homes, Al’s Barn in Munday WV, Jefferson School in Parkersburg, Mineral Wells community center, Kanawha community center, Palestine, Kanawha ice cream social, Kanawha apple butter festival, and the Russell Building in Millfield OH.  They played at the Kanawha Apple butter Stir-off in Kanawha, WV and Cairo Pioneer Days in October 2006 and 2007.  Also the Husher’s Run and Ellenboro Methodist Churches had them in for their homecoming and a revival.

They are presently scheduled for similar events in 2008.

Elijah is the youngest at eleven years and can play guitar, mandolin, upright bass, and claw hammer banjo.  Salathial is 12 and plays a very smooth fiddle.  Swanagan is 16 and he plays the 5-string banjo, guitar, harmonica and upright bass.  The boys were all awarded a one-week all-expense-paid scholarship to the Augusta music series in Elkins in 2006. This was based on their demonstrated proficiency with acoustic instruments.  The boys were featured in a front-page article of the Parkersburg News on September 6, 2006 and the Parkersburg Sentinel on the same date.

Chad Ray is their father.  He is the primary gospel singer for the group and he plays acoustic guitar. He is a supervisor for Wood County Habitat for Humanity and owner of Ray Builders.  His wife, Vanessa, provides vocal accompaniment for the group.

Philip Jones is the only one who is not a family member. He plays flattop guitar and vocals. A native of Ritchie County and a former attendee at the Cairo Baptist Church back in the 50's, he has been playing for many years and with such groups as Rocky Mountain Bluegrass, Rusty Conrad, Tunnel Hill and others. He and his wife Carole also perform together.

The Ray’s music background began with the boys’ grandfather, Raymond Ray, who has played and sung gospel music for many years.  Their uncle, Danny Ray, is also an accomplished songwriter and musician.  Vanessa’s family also included musicians.

This group is available for weekends and evenings, churches, fairs, homecomings, birthday parties, reunions, etc...  Our purpose is to provide the boys more opportunity for meaningful performing experience.  And we all enjoy this wonderful hobby.
