
Zamboanga, in western Mindano, is the melting pot of the south. Five tribal groups are found here: the Badjao, Subanon, Sama, Tausug, and Yakan. It is here that Moslem influence is most visible especially in architecture although majority of people living here are still Christians.
what to see?
Zamboaga's most popular attraction is Fort del Pilar with its black coral walls and was built in 1635 as a protection against intruders. It is now a historical shrine and museum with exgibits and dioramas. There is also Pasonanca Park with its botanical garden and freshwater swimming pool and Climaco Freedom Park which has facilities for camping, hiking and has lovely views. Rio Hondo is a Moslem Village at the mouth of a river and houses here are linked by footbridges. Taluksangay, is another village where memebers of the Samal Tribe live in their huts on stilts. The Yakan Village, 7-kilometers away form the city is settled by Basilan natives. All these villages have lovely Mosques, the one in Taluksangay built in 1885 is the oldest in the city.
what to do?
Zamaboanga also has nice beaches and islands. The best is Sta. Cruz Island, a 25-minute boat ride from Lantaka or Golf and Beach Park. It boast a stretch of pinkish sand beach and offers somesnorkeling and diving nearby as well. For sports, there is a golf courses built in 1910 and three tennis clubs.
