Week 5 Studs and Duds
Studs
Cowboys QB Drew Bledsoe said before the game that he "dared" the Eagles to blitz. DE Darren Howard must have taken this personally because he had a stellar game racking up 2 sacks and getting in Bledsoe's face. This is what the Eagles wanted when they signed him.
After missing a few games with an injury, CB Lito Sheppard provided a huge boost to the secondary with 2 interceptions on the day. One of which, a 102 yard run back to break any chance of a Cowboys comeback
QB Donovan McNabb had a lot to prove this game and he passed with flying colors. McNabb was 18-33 for 354 yards and 2TDs as he continued what has been an outstanding year for him thus far.
What a great story WR Hank Baskett is. After being signed as an undrafted free agent by Minnesota, he is then traded to the Eagles where he has a great camp and makes the team. Baskett had his first great day as an Eagle with 3 catches for 112 yards including an impressive 87 yard catch and run.
A guy who has really stepped up his play has been DT Darwin Walker. Walker and Howard had an unbelievable day pressuring Drew Bledsoe. Walker in particular registered 3 sacks as he once again showed the Eagles were smart in getting rid of Corey Simon a year ago.
Duds
LB Dhani Jones once again had a game that left much to be desired. When he wasn't blowing missing tackles on RB Julius Jones, he was getting fooled on play-actions and blowing coverage on TE Jason Whitten. Dhani Jones is the one linebacker not playing well right now and he may be replaced very shortly.
You hate to pick on a guy who has been injured all week, but RB Brian Westbrook had a bad game. Westbrook couldn't do anything running or receiving the ball and he also fumbled. This was a rare off-day for B-West. You will not see to many days like the one he had against the Cowboys.
RT William Thomas is usually dependable and for the most part his game was okay, but he messed up blocking on one key play that instead of resulting in Eagles points, resulted in a McNabb fumble and a Dallas TD. Thomas has a huge responsibility and has to make every block to protect #5.
Honorable Mention
Studs
After Todd Herremans went down, LG Scott Young was called on to replace him for the quarter in which Herremans was out. Young did so and did a great job in the process. Depth is crucial, especially on the linel and Young provides that quite well.
FS Brian Dawkins had another great game. When he is not pumping up his guys on defense, B-Dawk is making plays. He had a great momentum-killing interception that proved the Eagles D was ready for this game.
LT Jon Runyan only gave up one sack on Sunday, and there was evidence of flagrant holding on the play it occurred on. Bringing Runyan back had to be one of the best moves the Eagles brass made in the off season. Runyan has cut down on the holding penalties and done a great job for the Birds.
CB Sheldon Brown was a tough choice for this because he did miss some tackles. However, Sheldon's job was to cover Terrell Owens. He did that, and did it well keeping the hated receiver out of the end-zone making every Eagles fan eccstatic.
Duds
SS Michael Lewis played a decent 59 minutes, however in the final minute he was called on what was obvious pass interference and could have led to a Dallas TD to tie the game. Lewis was lucky that Lito Sheppard would bail him out.
TE LJ Smith had a good day receiving wise as he had a really nice reception in the game. This was overlooked because of a horrible play by Smith in which he failed to make what looked like a sure tackle on DeMarcus Ware's 64 yard fumble return TD. Smith simply needs to try harder and make those plays.
