Week 13 Studs and Duds
Studs
On a day where Rocky was at the Linc, QB Jeff Garcia showed the eye of the tiger, having his best game in a long time and making us feel like we were in 1999 again. Garcia was excellent after struggling early completing 21 passes for 312 yards, 3 TDs, and running away from would-be tacklers. A great game for Garcia to build off as the Eagles try to make the playoffs.
WR Donte Stallworth showed up big in this one, showing his true #1 receiver potential with 4 catches for 111 yards and 1 TD. Stallworth is not only a great player when healthy, he is also one of the most active and encouraging guys on the sideline with his teammates.
Ignore what Joe Theismann said, T Jon Runyan played excellent for the Eagles on Monday containing the dangerous Carolina DE Julius Peppers. Holding or no holding, Runyan was called for one penalty (false start) the whole game and helped give Garcia the time and protection he needed.
WR Reggie Brown has really built on his solid rookie campaign with a pretty solid 2006 season. Brown made some tough catches on Monday with Carolina DBs all over him. Brown finished with 5 catches and 79 catches with 1 TD. Despite the Eagles' struggles this year, Brown has been consistently good.
Clutch. That's the only way to describe CB Lito Sheppard's game clinching interception. Lito's having a pro-bowl worthy year and his catch last night left Eagles fans singing the "Lido" song as they embraced a nice win by the Birds.
The emotional leader of the defense, FS Brian Dawkins came to play last night and do so with style. Dawkins was all over the place and was electric with his interception that led to points for the Eagles. As a side note, no one can celebrate or dance like Weapon X.
Duds
The only obvious dud in this game was CB Rod Hood. Hood missed tackles, did not finish tackles, and got beat in coverage several times. Since he is a free agent at the end of the year, Hood's days in Philadelphia may be coming to an end.
Got to hand it to ESPN. They have a walking sleeping pill in Joe Theismann announcing the game, public enemy #1 Michael Irvin annoying everyone outside the state of Texas with his ability to relate everything to the Cowboys no matter what the topic, and Tony Kornheiser's lame jokes. Last night was just crazy as they once again drew attention to the "booing Santa Claus" story from 1969. This story will never die as long as ESPN is there to bring it up at the drop of a hat no matter what If they are going to focus on poor Philly fan behavior they should bring up the "flare gun incident" or maybe Jimmy Johnson getting hit with a snowball. Santa Claus? Bah Humbug!
Honorable Mention
Studs
In his first NFL start, LB Omar Gaither did a very respectable job taking over for Matt McCoy. He made several good tackles and used his speed to his advantage.
DE Jaqua Thomas' pressure on Jake Delhomme helped set up the pick by B-Dawk. In a year where he hasn't done very much, this was a great job by Thomas.
RBs Brian Westbrook and Correll Buckhalter did a great job moving the chains and making plays when the offense needed them to. A great effort by Westbrook and Bucky.
Duds
Philadelphia has the best fans in sports, hands down. However the display last night by some of the fans was shameful. Jeff Garcia was doing a good job and fans still wanted to see AJ Feeley. AJ Feeley is not Joe Montana, and some fans need to realize that. His play in 2002 was simply average at best. We won those games because of our defense, not because of Feeley. Garcia is in there for a reason. Andy Reid made the right decision sticking with the veteran whether some fans like it or not.
