The Chevrolet Monte Carlo was introduced in mid 1969 as a 1970 model. It was Chevy's entry in the mid-size personal luxury/grand touring class. They offered luxury (by 70's standards) and performance (again, by 70's standards). These cars are powerful, and truly fun to drive. Despite their size (they had a 116' wheelbase, is 205.8 inches long, and a longer hood than a mini truck bed), they weigh no more than a Camaro or Corvette. These cars have a very good suspension. With some modern tweaking, these babies will even handle at least as good as a Mustang!
1970 Monte Carlo. Easily distinguished by it's round turn signals mounted in the front bumper.

It's rumored that the LS6 454/450hp was COPO in some Monte SS' but I don't have proof of this.

Starting with the 1973 model, although a classic in it's own right, the Monte became big and heavy (about 4000 lbs.) and horsepower dropped (down to 140hp!), due to government emissions regulations. There would not be another Monte Carlo SS untill 1983. These former powerhouses became lumbering, underpowered gas guzzlers that only served to fuel tree-hugging liberals causes. I think it's a shame, because the 1973-1977 Monte's were nice cars too! They were very successful in NASCAR.
To more Monte Carlo stuff!
Quick Glossary

HP=horsepower
RPO=Regular Production Order
COPO=Central Office Production Order. Very, very few cars were ordered that way. The most famous example is COPO 9560, the 1969 Camaro with the all aluminum 427 600-plus horsepower V8.
Gross vs. Net Horsepower
Gross HP: Horsepower measured at the engine, with no external accessories running.

Net HP: Horsepower measured at the wheels with all accessories attached and operating (a/c, alternator, emissions equipment, power steering ect.)

Got a comment?
A quick note about my handle "Phatkat". It seems to be copied alot. I've had it since 1984, when I was a DJ in New York, and has been my license plate since 1994. I just wanted to footnote that.
