The second project of the year was to complete five basic types of welds.  But first, students had to pass a safety test that included the following tips:

1. NEVER arc welds or watch arcs welding being done without using a protective shield.  Gas welding goggles or sunglasses are not satisfactory.
2. Wear goggles when chipping slag (the coating formed on the weld).
3. Wear suitable clothing for welding.
4. Do not weld where solvent or paint fumes may collect. Remove all flammable materials from the welding area.
5. Weld only in a well ventilated area.
6. Treat any cut or burn promptly.
7. Safety goggles should be worn under your welding shield for additional safety.
8. Do not attempt to weld a container until you have determined whether flammable liquids were stored in it. Get them steam cleaned or fill them with water before welding.
9. Use care when handling metal that has just been welded. A serious burn could result.
