Sons of Dr. Patrick J. & Renee Garland

On the Memorial Page we have provided the names and data on a list of Irish Garlands who gave their lives while serving in the British Armed Forces during World War I. On a recent trip to Ireland, I learned of another family of Garlands, who served in World War II, and are just as deserving of recognition.

Dr. Patrick James Garland and his wife, Renee, had four sons and a daughter, and were residents of Ballinacor, County Wicklow. All four sons died while serving in the Royal Air Force. They are: Pilot Officer Donald Edward Garland, 12th Squadron, R.A.F., who was killed, on 12 May 1940, by enemy fire while leading an aerial assault on an important German bridge. For his heroic actions, during this attack, Donald was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross. He was the first Irishman, and the first R.A.F. officer to be awarded this medal during World War II. Pilot Officer Desmond Garland, R.A.F., was killed while flying an aerial mine laying operation over Dutch waters, during September 1942. John Garland, who was turned down from flying duties, due to medical reasons, went on to become a Medical Officer of the R.A.F. In March of 1943. John died of natural causes. Pilot Officer Patrick James Garland, 168th Squadron, the eldest son, died in a flying accident during January 1945. The tragic story of this family can be found in the book, "Irish Men and Women in the Second World War," by Richard Doherty, and published by Four Courts Press, in 1999.
