Candidates must realize and plan for issues involving social, legal,
and
ethical issues in technology. This includes development of a classroom
Acceptable
Users Policy (AUP) and teaching PK-12 students about copyright laws
and regulations.
14.1 Establish classroom policies and procedures that ensure compliance with copyright law, fair-use guidelines, security and child protection.
Evidence / Artifact:
Here is a link to the Copyright and Fair Use policy displayed by the North Carolina Department of Public Education.
Here is a lesson plan that teaches the importance of following copyright law and internet safety.
Reflection:
It is very important that we teach our students
to respect the property of others and that they know how to properly cite
what they are using. Our students also need to know that they can't
simply copy and paste information that they think is good. Knowing the
copyright laws and fair-use guidelines is important in any school environment.
It would also be helpful if students had copies of these policies attached
to their computer desk. Teachers must constantly review these policies
as well so that students will always remember their importance.
It is also important that we show students the proper
ways to use internet access and that they know what improper behavior is.
Students need to know where they can and cannot go on the internet.
They also need to know what to do if something "improper" appears on the
computer while they are working with it. We need to make sure that
our students know what is good information and what is not. We also
need to direct our students in how to stay on the good sites and
steer away from the not-so-good sites.

14.2 Ensure equal access to media and technology resources for all students
Evidence / Artifact:
Here is a general schedule for the classroom. Computer Lab times are highlighted in red. All students have computer access during lab times.
Here is a center schedule for classrooms that use a center schedule. Students rotate and all have access to the computer center at least once a week.
Reflection:
It is our responsibility as a teacher to see that
all of our students in the classroom have equal access to technology.
By creating schedules and having times for all students to access the available
technology we are assuring that all students are having the best experience
possible. We must assure that all students are able to use the programs
on the computers and we should not pull out students during their lab times.
Technology is a wonderful resource and it should be used equally by all
students in the classroom. As the teacher we must assure that all
students are having access to the technology, not just a few. By
having lessons and designated times to use computers and other technology
we can assure that this goal is being met and that all students are granted
the technological access they deserve.

14.3 Social, legal, and ethical issues related to technology use (Demonstrate knowledge and integration of network security and Acceptable Use Policy into teaching).
Evidence / Artifact:
Here is a lesson plan that teaches internet safety and copyright information.
Here is a link to the Haywood County acceptable use policy
Here is a link to a site about netiquette. We would talk about these guidelines as a class before using the internet.
Reflection:
As teachers it is important that we know
the acceptable use policies of our district and that we model this type
of use for our students. Students watch what their teachers do constantly
and they need to see their teachers using technology in ways that are relevant
and acceptable. It is also important that we show our students the
correct ways to utilize the internet. They need to know that there
are rules over the internet just as their are rules inside the classroom.
Teaching students these ideas before they access the internet is also important.
This is not something that should be taught only after an unacceptable
use occurs, but should instead be used as a preventive for problems such
as this. If we show our students proper behaviors related to technology
use at school we can hope that they will carry these behaviors to technology
use outside of the school environment. These policies need to be
constantly reinforced so that our students will know what types of behaviors
are expected from them and so that they will know the proper way to use
technology.
