| After coming up just short in their quest for a second consecutive AFL East title in 1964, the Patriots tried to squeeze one more season out of an aged defense and the plan backfired. The normally stout run defense began to show some holes and the offense which managed to score enough to keep the Patriots competitive had a terrible year as rookie Jim Nance paced the league's worst rushing attack with 321 yards. A failing defense coupled with an anemic offense, spelled doom for the Patriots and it reflected immediately in their record as only a 13-13 tie with San Diego highlighted an 0-6-1 start. A second half rally pushed the team into 3rd place finish in a weak division, but far behind division champion Buffalo. |
