What is Electroforming ?

Definition: The process of growing noble metals in a tank of chemicals.  The tank chemicals are relevant to the metal being used / grown.  e.g. Copper requires Copper Sulphate and Copper anodes, to which an electrical current is applied.

Electroforming is similar to electroplating but by far more involved and versatile.  In electroplating one talks in minutes, while with electroforming one would talk in hours.

Electroforming is the most accurate means of copying known to mankind, with accuracy levels reaching 13 x 10-6.  That is why it is used to make musical records, compact discs (CDs) and cappillary tubes (injection needles).  However, it can also be used to make artistic articles. e.g. Trophies and Edwardian tea sets which all contains detailed artwork.

There are two main ways of electroforming.

(1) Where the original mandril is removed leaving a free standing article of the metal used.

(2) Where the original mandril is left inside, encased with the metal used.

It is even possible to have a combination of both.

Faraday's law plays a big roll in what can and can not be electroformed.  Having worked with electroforming since 1972, Cold Castings has extensive knowledge on this subject.
