The Society formerly called The Pet Shelter was started by colonial officers who were moved by the sight of diseased dogs and sick animals that roamed the streets. KSPCA was registered on 11th September 1962.
Meetings were held, however with the Borneonisation of Civic Service, most Expatriate Officers left Kuching, and towards 1968, the Society was no longer active. However, it was never deregistered.
In mid 1975, a group of local animal lovers, British Council representatives, Mr. & Mrs. Philips and some other expatriate officers rejuvenated and reactivated the Society.
A protect committee was formed and the first meeting was held on 10th October 1975 at the Ever sleigh Residence of the then British Council Representative, Mr. P. Williams. Since then, the founder members have been most active in membership drive, forming first and foremost Pound committees, Animal Collection Services, Wildlife committee and Publicity. The Society¨s first committee was headed by the commitees.
