Psalm 24 (King James version)
1 [[A Psalm of David.]] The
earth [is] the LORD'S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell
therein.
2 For he hath founded it upon the seas, and established it upon
the floods.
3 Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand
in his holy place?
4 He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted
up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully.
5 He shall receive the blessing from the LORD, and righteousness
from the God of his salvation.
6 This [is] the generation of them that seek him, that seek thy
face, O Jacob. Selah.
7 Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye
everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.
8 Who [is] this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the
LORD mighty in battle.
9 Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift [them] up, ye
everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.
10 Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, he [is] the King
of glory. Selah.
NOTES:
*airelinde 'holy song, psalm' < aire 'sanctity' (PM:363) + linde
'song, air, tune' (LR:359); cf. S aerlinn *'holy song' (RGEO:70) < aer
'holy' (VT44:21,24) + lind 'aire, tune' (LR:369). *attayunque '24,
lit. two-twelve' < atta 'two' + yunque '12' (PE14:82; evidently the same in
later Quenya, cf. stem yunuk(w)- in VT42:24,31).
Verse 1: *Laviro, adapted from Hebrew Dawid 'beloved'.
Endóre 'Middle-earth' (Appendix E) for
Hebrew tevel 'world, habitable part'; cf. "It [Middle-earth] is is
just a use Middle English middel-erde (or erthe), altered from Old
English Middangeard: the name for the inhabited lands of Men 'between the
seas'." (Letters:220)
Verse 2: *nuv- 'lay base, foundation, root; found' < NDUB-,
DUB- 'lay base, foundation, root; found' (VT45:38).
Verse 3: *tyul- 'stand up (straight)' < TYUL- 'stand up
(straight)' (LR:395).
Verse 4: *lustie 'vanity' < lusta 'void,
empty' (LR:370). karpale 'a plucking, tugging, wrenching. - deceiving,
tricking.' (PE12:45).
Verse 5: #net- 'to get' < nete- 'I get' (PE12:66). *aistale
'blessing' < *aista- 'to bless' (VT43:30)
< aistana
'blessed' (VT43:30). *failie
'fair-mindedness, justice, generosity, i.e. righteousness' < faila 'fair-minded, just, generous' (PM:352). rúnie
'freeing, i.e. salvation' < rúna- '[to] free' (VT43:23; it is not sure whether it is an adj. or
verb).
Verse 6: nóre 'country, land, race' (LR:378) for Hebrew dor
'generation (characterised by quality, condition, class of men); dwelling-place,
habitation'. *Yácovo, adapted from Hebrew Ya`aqov 'heel holder;
supplanter'. Sére 'rest, repose, peace' (LR:385) for Hebrew selah,
a technical musical term probably showing accentuation, pause, interruption.
Verse 7: telma 'a conclusion, anything used to finish off a work or affair', often
applied to the last item in a structure, such as a coping-stone, or a topmost
pinnacle (WJ:411). *-lla, 2. person pl. possessive ending
< -lle, 2. person pl. verbal ending (VT43:36).
