Appearance Changes:
Be wary of any product that promises to clear up all fungal diseases or water problems. If
you do not have a good quality product made specifically for one disease, you could
severely damage or kill your fish.
Eye Disease
Eye fungus or protruding eyes are the most common disorders. Take your fish to the vet for an exact
diagnoses and treatment.
Fin Rot
Characterized by frayed or split fins, possibly with white or red edges. First observe to make sure that
other fish are not picking on it. Then check water quality and examine fish for parasites. Treat
accordingly.
Flukes
These parasites will cause a very noticeable loss of color. If they reach the gills, the fish will surface
frequently for air. Use a salt water bath to rid your fish of these parasites. See instructions for salt
water bath under fungus.
Fungus
A fungal infection can be identified by a white fluffy substance that covers the fishes body. Make sure
you are adding the correct amount of salt to your aquarium, this will help prevent the spread of the
fungus. You need to 'bathe' your fish in a salt water bath a couple times a week until the fungus is
gone. Prepare your salt water (2 tablespoons/gallon), put about one gallon (or more if you have an
exceptional large fish) of tank water in a clean bucket and place your fish in it as a holding tank.
Add the salt water to the holding bucket. Let fish rest under constant supervision for 5 minutes and
return fish only to tank. Add stress coat to water upon return to ease the shock.
'ICK' or White Spot
The most common aquarium disease. White spots cover the fishes body. Do not bother to remove
the affected fish. A contagious disease that once spotted, the entire tank has already been exposed
and needs to be treated. 'ICK' medication is widely available in pet stores.
Tuberculosis
An affected fish is lethargic and may have some loss of color. If caught in time, the fish can be
treated with medication from your vet.
Velvet Disease
Caused by a parasite, the fish will have a 'velvet' appearance. A contagious disease in which the
entire tank should be treated for. Medication is available from a veterinarian.
