Documentation of the Development Process

This website is built for my father, who is a longtime artist. I wanted him to have a website where he can showcase his art abilities and potentially offer fine art services. At first I thought through as to what I want to display on the website. Then I looked at some other artists’ examples and I combined both my vision and what’s popular on the web in this sector.

Defense of the Final Product

I made the design choices based on what I feel is attractive for someone looking for art and also try to keep it up-to-date with today’s design trends. For the Homepage, I chose a white, clean background and I chose to display paintings from various areas that my father devotes to. These paintings are in a grid making it look like a single, large painting. I then added links to various areas of the sites, which also serves as quick marketing on the homepage. The About site has a picture of my father and his story. The text is centered on a plain white background, which is easy to read for the visitor. At the bottom I added a table, which was required in the rubric. The table contains differences between various colors. Beneath the table, I also embedded a video, which was also a requirement by the rubric. The Gallery page has four pictures representing four different galleries presented in the website. Under each gallery is a label that expands on the hover and has a link that opens the respected gallery. This page is designed to be simple, where a visitor can take time to make a choice as to which gallery he/she wants go into. All gallery pages are designed the same way. They all have thumbnail images of the paintings in respective gallery and the image becomes enlarged when clicked on. The background is white and simple so that the picture stands out and there’s nothing distracting around it. Services page is also simple with white background. There are services listed in a centered matter going down the website. Beneath the services, there is a big “get a quote” button that also enlarges when hovered over. When the button is clicked, it will redirect the user to the contact page. The Contact page has a form that the user can fill out and submit to contact the artist. The form is light gray on a white background. It’s again designed to be simple and not distractive.

Opportunities for Improvement and Growth

In the future, I would like to incorporate ecommerce, an option to buy the original paintings, and update the galleries with new art. I could have definitely spent a lot more time on the design and research, so that I could make more up-to-date choices. I was limited with the knowledge with html, as I am not proficient at it. As time will go on, I would like to research more and learn new tricks.
