"Don Peter": My Linux Bits

"Hi - there you are again. Looking for some clues on installing Linux on MCA machines ? Hah - how did I know that ? Only very desperate figures find this page here. And while I am -more or less- a Linux illiterate and not a full Linuxologist I have only few things to share. But I hope you find them useful no less.

See you later then. Leave "Don Peter" a note if you like."

SuSE Linux 7:
  • 486 MCA Bootdisk with kernel 2.2.16 suitable for most newer PS/2
(SCSI, Mod. 9556 / 9557 upwards. Has no ESDI / MFM / IDE support.)

    (Internal Version 4.03 / 2001-01-25)
    Extract the ZIP, then run
    lnx7m403 A: /S under DOS to extract it to a 1.44MB floppy.
Don't forget to replace the (dummy and inappropriate) kernel choosen during
SuSE 7 install with the one from this bootdisk !
Don't forget to re-run LILO install after you'd replaced the kernel ...

Common Tools for almost all versions:
  • XGAPOS: Source-Code or the Executeable
  • XGAPOS2: Source-Code or the Executeable

Differences between the two: practically none.
You need to be root and run it with ./xgapos or ./xgapos2 respectively.
This tool is recommended to make XF86 Setup with XGA-2 cards lesser painful ...

  • DISPLAY: Source-Code or the Executeable

Displays an 8-character message on the Mod. 95 or Server 500 LED panel.
Useless for other machines. Type ./display to get a Mini-Help.

  • LINUXINFO: Source-Code or the Executeable

Displays some status infos on a Mod. 95 or Server 500 LED panel.
Also useless for other machines. Type ./linuxinfo to get it going.

XF86 XGA-2 Config Files:
  • XGA-2 with Eizo F35 Multisync screen.

May work with many Multisyncs that do 27 - 70KHz horizontal and 50 -120Hz vertical.

Network Device Drivers:

MCA SCSI Driver:
  • IBM MCA SCSI Driver Version 3.2 (TAR/GZ)

    Rename on download to ibmmca.tar.gz.
This archive file contains the required files that have to be put into
    /usr/src/linux/drivers/scsi.
ven though all versions after 6.0 come with an IBM MCA SCSI driver some of them
have a lot bugs. Michael Lang is fighting a heroic battle against the bugs - and
maybe there is a new, more current version on his IBM MCA SCSI page already ... ?

This 3.2-version has prooved reasonably stable for 2.2.x kernels.
