quiz, hot shot: what do the movies "Rocky", "Blade Runner" and "The Full
Monty" share in common despite their different genres?
Some
of the most memorable movies I've seen, whether it's a drama, a sci-fi
flick or a comedy, heve a strong sense of
place and time. It's hard to imagine the 'Italian
Stallion' living anywhere but 'Philly', as it's hard to ignore the perpetual
gloom hanging over Sheffield that drives Gaz and crew to 'take off their
kits' in financial desperation. In "Blade Runner", Ridley Scott's visual
genius created a futuristic city so vivid that seemingly had a life of
its own. In these films the backdrop of the stories serve more than just
props: it's as if they have their own characters, playing their roles in
giving the story form and shape.

Despite
being written in Old English, William Shakespeare's
plays have universal appeal. The morals and values depicted in the plot
and the way he wrote in the scenes allowed for flexible interpretations
within most cultures and religions.

Juliet puts Shakespeare's most famous
tragic love story within a Malaysian context. Drawing inspiration from
KL's
Chinatown, "Lomeo + Juliet" is an urban love
story, conflicted by gang rivalries, set in the unmistakable backdrop of
a colorful but gritty Petaling Street. |
