He is keeping her to be his whore.
La- she is already a monster if she travels with demons! Neither see the clawed hand until the first speaker is pressed against the tree. "When she passes through your village... you will all treat her with respect." The women scuttle away, their jars abandoned to the monster who could hear them across a stream and a field- and reach them within their pause for breath. The tiny retainer watches his lord return and brush off the questions of the chattering companion. The retainer conceals his confusion for a few miles before he finally speaks. "My lord, why did you waste your breath on those women?" They both look back towards the girl, her face lighting up as she notices them and smiles. -Something- flashes in golden eyes so much like his father's, his brother's. Of course the question only results in a hurt retainer. But as the retainer watches from the ground, there is another answer in the way that golden gaze (so very much like his father's) follows the laughing girl. Innocence always calls mutely for protection when we would be so much wiser to guard ourselves against it. -The End- The last line is a direct quote from Graham Greene which in its entirety reads, "Innocence always calls mutely for protection when we would be so much wiser to guard ourselves against it: innocence is like a dumb leper who has lost his bell, wandering the world, meaning no harm." |
