A/N: In honour of Midoriko Sama's birthday, I wrote a fic that continued an idea that she had started and left unfinished, found here. I tried to write this using as much of Midi-chan's style and characterizations as possible and have failed miserably ;) And er... sorry- this came out far more angsty than I originally intended :) Hope that you enjoy anyways, love!
Mushin, Karma and the Dangers of Women
Somewhere in between the alcohol and the flirtation techniques, Mushin had managed to let slip one good piece of advice. "Women, my boy, are the most dangerous creatures youll ever encounter. Fight the demons. Fight the thieves and cutthroats. But if you're faced with an angry woman... run and never look back."

Miroku had used this advice very successfully for most of his traveling career.

Unfortunately, Sango was both faster and stronger than he was.

Miroku raised his hands above his head, praying that whatever karma he still had would kick in right about then. "Please Sango-sama, wait!"

Sango lowered Hiraikotsu minimally, but he could see the white in her knuckles.

"Give me one good reason, houshi-
sama that I shouldn't bash your head in for destroying Kagome-chan's happiness!"

"Because I know how to fix it!"

Oh hell. That was
not what he'd meant to say. Somewhere karma was laughing its head off.

Sango was looking at him expectantly, her fingers beating against Hiraikotsu.

Miroku closed his eyes- he
had planned to come up with something, but not quite this... soon.

He pictured Inuyasha and Kagome in his mind, trying to work out a scenario that would give Kagome her precious moments without embarrassing Inuyasha. Unfortunately, picturing Kagome led to picturing Sango led to picturing Kagome and Sango led to-

"So whats this idea, houshi-sama?... And why are you drooling?"

Before Sango had a chance to make any mental connections, Miroku blurted out the first thing that came to mind.

"Ill! Naked!"

With a speed he hadn't known that he possessed, Miroku dodged the incoming blow. And started talking faster than he'd ever talked in his life.

"What I mean is- Kagome-sama's last good moment was when Inuyasha was ill and naked and he let her get close to him!"

Sango stopped moving. "But thats useless now- he won't let a situation like that ever happen again."

Miroku spoke very, very softly- he could feel the fragile ground he was treading. "But what if it wasn't
Inuyasha who was ill?"

"No. Absolutely not."

"But Kagome-sama..."

Kagome tried to keep herself under control. It was obvious to her, even if Sango hadn't figured it out yet, that somehow Miroku had heard their conversation in the bath the previous night and that this was his twisted way of making up. She shuddered to think what he might attempt if he was actually
trying to make someone angry.

"Miroku-sama- I am
not pretending to be sick to get Inuyasha's attention! I have so few moments with him now that I won't poison the few I have by making them the result of a lie!"

Miroku looked as if he wanted to argue more, but Kagome had had enough. She was tired, it had been long day, their camping clearing was covered in rocks and Inuyasha would be back any second to ask her for ramen.

"Just leave me alone. That's all I ask."

She walked off towards the fire, trying very hard to pretend that the treacherous tears were just a result of the smoke. Perhaps it was because she was so upset that she missed the blow that tossed her across the clearing and into the tree.

Miroku stood frozen, horrified, as Inuyasha slaughtered the youkai and picked up Kagome's limp body.

Miroku's karma was beyond bad- well into the range of sadistically twisted.

Kagome was definitely ill now. Or she would be if she survived the next half hour.

He didn't remember much of what followed- just determining that Kagome was only unconscious, that she'd only bruised a few ribs, but would otherwise recover.

In a twisted way, his plans had succeeded beyond his wildest dreams. Inuyasha wouldn't let anyone, including Shippou touch her. Every injury was tended to with such frightening intensity that Miroku couldn't even think to tease him about trying to undress her.

Only when Kagome was completely treated and Inuyasha had wrapped himself around her so tightly that Miroku was afraid that her ribs would truly shatter, did Miroku leave them.

As soon as he was out of hearing range, Sango grabbed him by the arm and dragged him into the bushes.

"What did you
do?"

"Nothing! I swear!"

Miroku felt sick.

"Do you honestly believe that I would
hurt Kagome-sama?"

Sango deflated instantly.

"No. It was just so frightening... She nearly died out there. I mean she'll get better now, but the look on Inuyasha's face..."

Yes. Miroku had seen the look on Inuyasha's face. And the gods help anyone who interfered in this "quiet moment".

When the world came back in to focus, he was holding her so tightly that she almost passed out a second time. His claws were tangled in her hair, his face buried in the space between her shoulder and her neck.

But it was the words that got her heart racing.

Get better... Need you...

Love you...

She was so excited, so happy. They could finally have real moments to hold in her heart, no matter the outcome. But if she acknowledged him, it would mean that he would be forced to break his promise to Kikyou, that she would be forcing him into this situation. And even if it was never acknowledged, she would still
know now.

But to have all the misunderstandings swept away...

And Kagome did the hardest thing that she had ever done in her life.

She let herself slip back into darkness.

Miroku watched them, the gentle way that Inuyasha pressed his lips to the sleeping girl's forehead, the way she instinctively molded herself against him. It was wrong to be jealous, but he couldn't help the pain that he felt watching something so simple that might forever be denied to him.

He was never sure if he made a noise or if Inuyasha had always known, but Inuyasha turned at that moment and met his eyes. There was no shame or embarrassment there, no fear of discovery- only a deep-rooted sadness.

And love.

Miroku bowed his head briefly and turned away.

They all had to pay the prices of their various pasts.

He only made it a few dozen steps before Sango appeared in front of him, expression unreadable.

"You didn't interfere."

"We all need moments of quiet to hold to ourselves."

It was an attempt at redemption. But it was also... true.

There was a brief flicker of something- in Sango's eyes. And then she leaned in, so close, that he could feel her chest against his...her breath on his lips...and...her hand... on his face... He was fairly sure that he had forgotten how to breathe.

"Miroku?"

His name...

"Yes?"

Her voice was a low purr that he would never have associated with the formal slayer.

"If you
ever interfere with Kagome-chan again I will ensure that no one will be able to bear your children."

And then she stalked off, leaving him flushed and breathless.

Mushin had been right about one thing.

Women were
very dangerous.
