A/N: Kaguya is the big villain in the second movie. She's an absorber like Naraku and at some point in her existence she absorbed a tennyo (very, very roughly equivalent to an angel or "heavenly maiden", although that's a horribly inaccurate translation), basically granting herself immortality, plus other nifty skills that come with the tennyo's robes. She's icily good-looking, arrogant as hell, and thinks that Naraku's beneath her as a half-blood. All kinds of fun.

A/N2: Bonus cookies to anyone who recognizes the original fairytale- Japanese or European version ;)
Heavenly Creatures
She was bathing, because in all the stories the heavenly princess is always bathing when they take away her robes. It doesn't matter that there was no water for miles, that she was watching then-Kaguya's almost-shy, almost-clumsy approach for hours. The people who tell the stories will say that she was bathing. The tennyo thinks that maybe they are obsessed with the thought of her naked body covered in fine drops of water. Later, Kaguya will laugh and her eyes will glint as she says that it is a body well worth obsession.

The stories always speak of 'captivity'. They speak of the robe being withheld, of the woman begging to be released, of her being forced to go with the one who has removed her chance of escape. She remembers, inside this body that is no longer hers, of being curious, of wondering about the smell and dirt on the creature that faced her. Heavenly bodies do not interact with soil and she remembers running one long, fine finger down then-Kaguya's cheek and bringing it to her mouth to taste the sweat and blood. Then-Kaguya had eyed her like a snake or some other beautiful predator, the submission of one ready to be raised above the mud, if only in death. She wonders what the storytellers would say of the captive capturing the captor.

What the men whisper when they tell these tales is that ultimately the princess escapes because her captor is relaxed, lets her find her robes and she flies away, flies away to the world she was kept from. The tennyo smiles somewhere deep in Kaguya- the tennyo did indeed relax too much, tell her pet too much. Somewhere in the sweatbloodmud she lost her secret. Kaguya kept hers until the predator was already destroyed. Even the fascinated prey know that there is more than one way to be raised above mud. The tennyo does not blame her- the concept of loyalty is as foreign in heaven as it is in the world below. But maybe the men are right, maybe that night where she was taken in, gasping and screaming
not entirely in pain- was as close to true heaven as she'll ever come.

In the stories, the captor is raised to heaven to live with the princess- the captor becoming as heavenly as the princess. The tennyo knows Kaguya has changed since the absorption. The tennyo knows that the price of heaven is abstraction, distance from those below. To live without dirt, without heat you cannot know the taste of sweatblooddirt on your tongue. Now-Kaguya is as clean and arrogant as a fine blade or moonlight but sometimes, trapped deep inside the mock-angel's mind, the tennyo remembers.

heatcolddirtmudsweatsweatblood-

The tennyo longs for blood.
