She smiled.
It wasn't the last time she made him feel like an idiot.
They kept meeting.
He kept pretending it was the jewel (and her death) that held his interest.
He said "Ihateyouhateyouhateyou."
Even if no one else understood, they both knew it for the act of desperation it was.
She said, "Stay with me."
And he was lost.
Their secret was burned away in the purifying fire of misplaced vengeance.

He couldn't smile- the line of a bow and fifty years stretched taut between them.
She attacked him again and again, his almost-pleas lost in the rush of hate and pain.
He couldn't make her feel like an idiot.
