Subj.:  RS: Re Progressive Dinner

Question:

I've been asked to head our annual Christmas progressive Dinner and want to pick the brains of all of you wonderful women.  I am looking for a FANTASIC menu-- and something creative to do.  That’s all the farther I thought.  Keep the ideas rolling!  Thanks.  Sheryl

How about trying Italian?  Traditionally they have several courses.  We did a 5 course meal for our first RS Anniversary party and it was very well received.  This is what we served but there are lots of choices and Italians are very good cooks.

We started with appetizer kabobs - fancy toothpicks with chunks of sausage, veggies and pineapple served cold and a small stem of grapes on the plate.  Then soup - just tiny pasta cooked in chicken broth.  Caesar salad.  Main course was lasagna - think I'd serve a hot veggie Italian style too if I did it again.  Dessert was lemon ice and ammeretti (almond cookies).

The lasagna is the only thing that cost much but everyone was full in the end because you eat slow but that can be true of any progressive dinner.  You could even go so far as serving 'wine' in the little plastic wine glasses, a different kind for each course.  If you'd like recipes I have a good Italian cookbook (gift from my mother-in-law who married an Italian).  Jane F.

Last year we started at the church (so that we could car pool) and had hot cider while we gathered - moved to the salads - to the main course which was Hawaiian Haystacks (that was a real hit - and of course everyone got to eat only what they liked) - desert was all sorts of candy's.

We have traditionally done the gift exchange where you draw a number and can trade - but this year I think we'll try an idea I got off this list - read a story and move the packages every time the word "the" is said - keep whatever package you have at the end.

One year, we did a progressive craft - made wall hangings that said "Jesus is the reason for the season."  At one house we painted the boards - next house glued a wreath on and attached the wire hanger - at the last house we used markers and wrote the phrase.

We have also introduced our Pursuit of Excellence Program - a short step at a time - while we progressed.  I will also be anxiously watching for a new idea for this year.  OH - ONE GREAT THING - we have an somewhat inactive sister with a beautiful home - she let us come to her house and then started coming back to church - she has faded again - so guess where we're going again - hopefully we can re-motivate her, again.  Think about visiting the homes of less active sisters.  Geri
