Compilation of Ideas for R.S. Birthday Celebration

A Hawaiian friend of mine did this at a birthday dinner a few years ago. She fixed a dish called pork adobo. She served it with rice. It's inexpensive and easy to make and oh so gooooooood. She decorated with Hawaiian decor and had lanterns outside but since we couldn't have fire at the church we just didn't light them. It was still effective. R

Hello everyone, we have started a Secret Sister program in our ward which will go through Feb. and be revealed at our RS Birthday Celebration in March.

There is a really cool program called Seasons of Time in Linda Dastrup's YW book "Strengthening Families" at the LDS bookstores.  You assign speakers: Youth: How I can prepare now to be a wife and mother in the future?, mother of small children: How do I feel about the sacred responsibility I have to teach and train Heavenly Father's children?, mother of teenagers: As a mother how can I develop friendships with my children and a relationship of love and trust?, and grandmother: How creating a spiritual environment in our homes will help lead our children back to our Father in Heaven.  Set up display tables of representations of the spring, summer, fall, and winter seasons of a woman's life and decorate tables with things that represent the lives of the sisters in your ward.

Our Stake is planning an all day Service project for next year's RS birthday celebration. We are actually starting now, collecting things for kits and quilts for the Humanitarian Center. My understanding is that the actual day will spent sorting, organizing and quilting.

IF YOU CAN GET THEM COMPETITIVE  R.S. CAN SIT BACK AND RELAX??

LOL so true! We have a long-standing tradition in our ward. The RS birthday party includes a desert contest--for men only. We have the competition and then eat the entries. We have a great feast that night! (Except that year Garry Lewis made green rice crispy treats...)  Connie said:   WHERE is it written in STONE that Relief Society will always do the cooking?

Dinner or Refreshment Ideas

Taco Bar--have every bring an item, such as  cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, salsa, chiles,  guacamole, beans, chips or hard taco shells, flour tortillas--Provide shredded chicken and/or  seasoned hamburger.

Potato Bar--Make a sign up sheet for baked  potatoes, butter, sour cream, bacon, chives, cheese, chili, etc.

"Chinese Sunday Bar"--make a big pot of rice.   Have other sisters bring things like pineapple  chunks, water  chestnuts, chunks of chicken breast, chopped tomatoes, green onions,  shredded cheese, gravy, Chinese noodles, and  anything else you can think of, and put  it all out like a salad bar. You start out with rice  and build from there with whatever you like on it. Sometimes we had homemade rolls, other  times fortune cookies, crackers, etc. Whoever made the chicken, usually made some gravy too.  It is really good and more filling than you can  imagine.

Progressive dinner on BIKES--pedal to a  different course at each house (place somewhat close together and to the church) Those who can  not bike due to age or health complications, of  course, drive.  (We met at the church, did bike checks, etc.   Then one of the brethren followed behind the bikers with tire pumps, etc. or just biker pick ups if it got to be too much.  It was a great afternoon and we all had a wonderful time. After appetizers, salad and soup, we returned to the church for pie and ice cream. An Elder's Quorum President came up with this one

At Christmas, our RS planned a Christmas progressive dinner for the sisters only.... and to 3 homes that really went out for decorating in a major way.... one sister having 36 nativity sets on display alone!  Again this was a great time for sisters...

Party Ideas

Play “Pin the Flower Arrangement on the Table”, have a fact-finding worksheet (find someone  who dyes her hair, find someone who has lived in New York, find someone who likes artichokes, etc.), name that hymn, lip-sync contest, cookie exchange, cake decorating contest, balloon volleyball.

Program Ideas

Reenact a portion of the first Relief Society meeting, tell about ways the sisters served in the  beginning, have a priesthood brother come and read several of the statements Joseph Smith said about the Relief Society's purpose and potential.

Take the Relief Society through time--from the beginning through today. Share what prophets and other leaders have said about Relief Society and women in the Church.

Play the video of the last General Relief Society Meeting.

MANY years ago I attended a Woman's Conference with essentially this theme.  The main thing I remember about it was that they had teddy bears dressed up reflecting the different stages of a woman's life, with scripture references pertaining to that stage.  I saved the references, but due to years and moves and general craziness, I've lost some of them.  But here's what I have and what I remember.  I think there were 5 (or maybe 6) different "seasons.

"Young Woman (college age)--"...learn wisdom in thy youth..."  Alma 37:35

Working Woman (this was a nurse)--don't have the reference.

Bride--"...cleave unto the covenants which thou hast made..."  D&C 25:13

Mother--"...yea, they had been taught by their mothers..."  Alma 56:47

Older woman--don't have the reference

Also, remember that not all sisters fit the "traditional" mold--some will be single (never married), some will be childless, some will be divorced--so be inclusive and don't focus just on marriage and children.
