RELIEF SOCIETY PRESIDENT (Talk)

The Relief Society part of this circle includes  wives,  homemakers, young single sisters, single sisters, working sisters,  working mothers, single working mothers, less active sisters, inactive sisters, part member sisters, mothers of teens, sisters serving in young women ,sisters serving in  primary, grandmothers, handicapped / homebound sisters, our sweet golden group sisters.

As sisters in the gospel, we must work together, standing by each other whether it is as a presidency, as a board, as a ward or a stake.  And here we are right back where we began ..... The mission of Relief Society is to help women and their families come unto Christ by building personal testimony, and blessing the individual women.

We do this with wonderful teachers.... teaching inspired and spiritually uplifting lessons on Sunday....Emphasizing the scriptures and personal prayer.  I quote Sister Elaine Jack from Open house talk, Sept. 95  "Seek the blessings of the spirit...recognize that you need to build up your spiritual reserves.  Go to the temple often.  Live worthy of your temple recommend and reflect that worthiness in the way you approach your callings..

The scriptures can bring us the blessings of the spirit...The scriptures help determine a direction, solve a problem, understand a principle, or open your heart to hear a message...the blessings of the spirit abound in prayer...

Receiving answers to prayer cannot be spelled out in a talk like this.  But you have to work for them.  You have to prepare, listen and search.  And follow the promptings."

Another part of our purpose  is to strengthen families.  Our goal is to teach provident living and family preparedness classes in some exciting mini classes during homemaking each month and give sisters opportunity to share their talents with each other and also help us learn new skills.  Another part of our purpose is to develop and exercising charity........ Compassionate service.  This is a quote from Sister Elaine Jack,  "You feel good inside when you've helped someone, been kind, generous, patient, thoughtful.  It feels good to do good.  That sensation is a spiritual witness of the importance of your contribution".  Sisters have had opportunity to feel this as they have served each other.

Visiting Teaching.......Visiting Teaching is the biggest most important calling in the whole church.  When you touch the lives of mothers you touch the whole family."  Visiting teaching is the gospel in action.  It should bring us joy because we are living the law of Christ when we visit teach one another....

Sister Camilla Kimball was an exemplary visiting teacher for more than 50 years.  She understood the spirit of this great work and said, "We are responsible for one another.  I help you and you help me. Visiting  teaching offers some of the strongest evidence that we are truly willing to serve one another.

Our interdependence with others is the most encompassing fact of human reality. We need each other.  Blessed are those who can give without remembering and receive without forgetting.  All people need to appreciate what life has already given us and realize that we can still give what Christ has directed us to give...service and love." Service and Love...making each sister a part of the Circle of Sisterhood in the [           ] Ward........

And the last part of  our Relief Society Mission states participating fully in the blessings of the Priesthood. Sister Barbara Smith tells us  "As Relief Society sisters we walk in a companion role with the priesthood  not inferior or subordinate, but companion, side by side."  Sister Jack reminds us that when we meet with priesthood leaders,  be prepared with solutions to problems, with ideas for making programs more productive and with sensitivity and humility to listen and learn..."I need your help" is an appropriate and humble recognition that we are all on the Lord's errand:  we work as one.  We may draw upon the strength and power of priesthood leaders.  We may request and receive priesthood blessings in time of need ....
