Sisters:
I have been preparing the five-minute music period for this lesson topic. My plan is to focus on the tithing aspect of the lesson and use the hymn "Because I Have Been Given Much," no. 219.
This hymn is listed ten times in the topic index in the back of the hymn book under these headings: Brotherhood, Fasting, Gratitude, Love, Mercy, Reactivation, Sacrifice, Service, TITHING, and Youth.
The author, Grace Noll Crowell. was convalescing from a long and serious illness and with a glad rush of gratitude for release from pain, she wrote this hymn. You can read about this in the book _Our Latter-day Hymns_ by Karen Lynn Davidson.
As I have prepared, blessings have come to me this week in the form of the New Era magazine. I received the October issue on Wednesday and guess what! Look at page 20 for the headline: "I, TOO, MUST GIVE." The story tells about youth giving service and one of the boys reports: "You know how there's that song 'Because I Have Been Given Much'? Well, I, too, must give. It's my way of giving, other than tithing. ..."
And as I was going through my Mormonad collection I came across the perfect one for the message of this hymn. It is from October 1997 New Era. The title is "OPEN WIDE" (over a window in the sky) " - pay a full and honest tithing. It will open the windows of heaven for you." (See Mal.3:8-10)
That isn't all! The scriptures for this hymn include Jacob 2:17-19 which, of course, goes along with all the rest.
Before singing, the background info from the book will be given along with showing the October New Era picture/story headline and the Mormonad. The scripture will be read by a sister and all will sing the hymn and receive a handout of the scripture.
